Position Description
The primary duties of the Practice Leader Dams, Levees & Hydraulic Structures are to lead, direct, and market dam, levee and hydraulic structure projects across the United States and Internationally as assigned. Primary focus will be to serve the Energy, Federal and Natural Resource Management market sectors within HDR. Secondary focus will be support to Water and Transportation market sectors as required. Specifically, the Practice Leader will act as an active project principal and manager in the design process, performing independent design review and positioning teams for project pursuits. The Practice Leader will be responsible for staffing and leading a team of technical leaders for the dam and levee practice through out HDR. This team will be responsible for developing best practice guidelines, standard performance specifications for bidding and standard design details and processes. The Practice Leader will work within HDR policy to establish sequencing of project from marketing to completion. The Practice Leader will oversee the development, maintenance, and delivery of technologies and services to clients. Develops and applies processes and tools to assure cost-effective application of the technologies and services. Identifies emerging technologies needed to be competitive in the future. Works closely with marketing, technical and operational staff to identify needs to meet market drivers and/or create new markets. Leads in execution of technical development activities including design process, risk management and quality control. Is directly responsible as a client manager for strategic clients and projects. Identify and communicate client opportunities and match HDR's technical expertise with the needs of the client. Assists with and implements the companys technology, standards, project delivery practices, facilities, equipment, tools, and associated training programs for the successful execution of all work in the business line. Understands the construction management of dams and levees and how projects are sequenced. Must possess a broad understanding of all disciplines involved in the project, construction quality control, construction drawings and as-built plans. Serves as a mentor and resource for technical staff. Help teams to avoid problem project and provide troubleshooting when they arise, resolves internal conflicts. Foresee emerging market drivers and influence appropriate HDR development. Participate as a project team member. Direct industry/accociation technical messaging.



An initial responsibility is to lead and foster excellent communication with technical leaders as well as market sector and department leadership.

MS Degree in Engineering or in related field. Professional registration required.



15+ years project and program management in dam and levee projects is required.



Candidate should have excellent marketing and business development skills in addition to contacts/relationships in respective business class discipline.



Demonstrated expertise in team building and communication.

Will support significant travel to project, client and HDR office locations.



Previous experience managing staff, clients, contracts and hiring staff for an engineering consulting firm is desired.
